What changed since last month:
I decided to make no major changes to the portfolio going into April.
Exposure
Even with 12 systems, the portfolio usually only has 1–3 positions open at once. That matters. Small accounts don’t usually blow up from one trade. They blow up when several trades stack together and are correlated.
Note: A maximum of 2 systems were closed during March. Four systems were active at one point, but some trades were still open on April 1, so they were not counted in the March trade totals.
Lessons from March
The CL short system worked very well in March and was the clear driver of results. Most of the action came late in the month, and some of that carried into April.
Overall, I’m very happy with a 13% month while keeping risk relatively controlled. The stock market was down nearly 6% in March, while this portfolio was up, largely because of the CL trades.
Improvement Plan
A short system for big down days in the stock market, as I referenced in February.
A short Bitcoin system could also help over time.
Adding more energy and metals strategies would help the portfolio over the long run.
April plan
For April, I’m keeping the portfolio mostly the same while I focus on adding more short exposure. I’d also like to add a micro gold system by April if I can find one that fits the portfolio.
Without our CL oil short system, we still would have been up about 3–4% in March, which is still a solid month. If you could do that consistently, it would add up to a very strong year. Of course, real trading does not work that smoothly. There are always ups and downs.
Overall Gains
Since we started tracking the portfolio on February 3, 2026, the account is up almost 16% which equates to $4,300.
